To the Heschel community:
How time has flown!! Just yesterday we were standing outside of school gates for the first time, fresh-faced and with no sense of what was to come. We cannot believe that ten months have passed since that morning. Throughout those months we’ve been beside Heschel students in the widest range of settings and emotions. Here is just a short list of moments we’ll never forget (though there are many more)

  • Karaoke on the bus with Grade 6 on the way back from camp Gesher
  • Hearing Grade 1 speak Hebrew the first time and being blown away by their level
  • Leading chalk art and Israeli games on Yom Ha’atzmaut
  • Seeing Jacob Two-Two and really enjoying the songs
  • The SK classes running to hug us when we told them we’d be leaving soon.

Thank you, to each and every one of you, for making this year so special for us. A paragraph won’t do justice for all the thanks we have to say, so in true Heschel fashion we’ve put together a poem to express how we feel. We mean every word from the bottom of our hearts:

We’ve been fortunate enough to be a part
Of a school with Derech Eretz and a warm heart

From Shorashim to Charuv every day we would hop
All grades, all classrooms, from bottom to top

Our weeks started strong with early years’ smiles
You brightened our days and your hugs lasted miles

We saw your minds expand and Hebrew vocab advance
And you were sure to follow along when we led a dance

We would continue on to the elementary school
For plays and songs you were never too cool

You got super excited for games of “Canoe”
And we couldn’t stop laughing when we saw you “mew”

Next we continued up to Junior high
Such witty students are rare to come by

Your unending humor caught us off guard
You pushed through, spoke Hebrew, and studied hard

To the parents and staff – thanks so much for your support
Your care and attention – it never fell short

Even when things got tricky – you had our backs
The Shabbat invitations – they never lacked

We’ll be back home in Israel in just a bit
We’ll take with us your humour and wit

We’ll take your poetry and the arts
A piece of Heschel to keep in our hearts

Yours,
Hilli and Alon
